The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), alongside the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), launched a statewide Telecom Infrastructure Cleanup Exercise today. The effort targets improper telecom deployments across Lagos to protect critical national information infrastructure, enhance public safety, and boost service quality.

Starting on Toyin Street in Ikeja and nearby areas, inspectors uncovered hazardous over-the-air fibre cables dangling from gates, poles, gutters, and floors—some live and hazardously low to the ground, threatening safety, aesthetics, and network performance.

Official Statements from Initiators

  • NCC’s Tunji Jimoh, represented by Deji Roberts (NCC Assistant Director), highlighted nationwide concerns over shoddy deployments that risk damage and service disruptions; praised LASIMRA’s role and promised no service interruptions during fixes.
  • LASIMRA’s Akinbiyi Akindipe: Stressed a balanced regulatory stance under Governor Sanwo-Olu, urging operators via ATCON to swiftly correct issues before penalties, prioritizing safety and urban appeal.
  • ATCON’s Segun Okuneye: Affirmed industry support for sustainability, announced a stakeholders’ meeting for a fix roadmap, and called for strict compliance by ISPs and operators.

Participating firms included Galaxy Backbone, MTN, Airtel, FibreOne, TNL, ipNX, IHS, OneData, and African Data Centres. The initiative will expand statewide to elevate standards, safety, and reliability.
