The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) cautioned traders at Lagos Trade Fair Complex’s Balogun Business Association (BBA) market against price fixing and the unlawful “no return, no refund” policy during a sensitization visit on Thursday.
Zonal Coordinator Mrs. Olubunmi Dorcas-Otti explained that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act prohibits these anti-competitive behaviors, which harm business growth and consumer rights. She urged importers and manufacturers to prioritize quality products, avoiding substandard or harmful goods, and emphasized collaborative enforcement over strict penalties.
Head of Corporate Affairs Mr. Ukason Henry-Kissinger positioned FCCPC as Nigeria’s top regulator for fair competition, aiming to build trader partnerships for smooth compliance without market disruptions.
The commission’s Head of Legal, Mr. Peter Nwaebonyi, highlighted FCCPC’s prosecution powers and called on market leaders to identify violators of consumer protection rules.
BBA Assistant General Secretary Mr. Akidi Okey pledged support for ethical trading; requested enforcement without security escorts to reduce trader anxiety, and invited FCCPC to their April executive meeting for more education. The team also included surveillance head Mr. Olarenwaju Olusanya.
