The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has outlined ongoing efforts to strengthen cargo traffic and expand port capacity, particularly across eastern Nigeria. Speaking at the Enugu International Trade Fair, he revealed that the authority is investing in the rehabilitation of key ports in Onne, Warri, and Calabar, while also supporting the development of new deep seaports in the region to attract more vessels and increase cargo volumes.
He explained that these initiatives are aimed at improving connectivity between local producers—especially SMEs—and global markets. As part of broader reforms, the NPA is addressing long-standing bottlenecks affecting export competitiveness by introducing Export Process Terminals (EPTs), which serve as one-stop hubs for cargo handling, documentation, packaging, certification, and shipment.
Dantsoho also highlighted plans to fully automate port operations through the National Single Window (NSW) system, reducing human interference and enhancing transparency and efficiency. He described the NSW as a globally recognised platform that integrates all stakeholders in the trade value chain.
Additionally, the NPA is promoting non-oil exports through infrastructure upgrades, streamlined export processes, and improved port-hinterland linkages. Enugu was identified as a strategic commercial gateway for the South-East, with strong potential for agro-export growth.
He further noted that EPTs will be connected to Domestic Export Warehouses in collaboration with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, helping businesses nationwide access export opportunities. Dantsoho concluded by reaffirming the NPA’s openness to partnerships with investors and exporters.
