The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has flagged the resurgence of call masking as economic sabotage, warning it threatens telecom revenues, national security and the integrity of Nigeria’s communications ecosystem.

Following its 110th board meeting, the regulator said call masking, hiding or manipulating a call’s true origin, undermines legitimate operations, distorts industry earnings and creates openings for criminal exploitation.

The NCC pledged sustained action, including collaboration with security agencies and industry stakeholders to identify, prevent and eliminate call-masking activities.

It also disclosed plans to strengthen regulatory technology, noting that its Device Management System is now live and the Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS) will go live in October 2026 to better manage telecom identities and devices.
