The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration & Control (NAFDAC) has directed manufacturers of alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and PET or plastic bottles below 200ml to recall the banned products nationwide. The agency said the recalled items would be documented and destroyed under its supervision, with manufacturers covering the cost.
The directive followed an Irrevocable Enforcement Undertaking signed by the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria, the Association of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employers, and their member companies. The ban, which took effect on January 1, 2026, is part of efforts to limit children’s and young people’s access to cheap, easily concealed, high-alcohol-content drinks.
NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye said enforcement would continue through factory inspections and nationwide raids on markets, motor parks, shops, bars and distribution centres. Manufacturers whose facilities were sealed must dismantle, disable or reconfigure production lines used for the prohibited pack sizes before seeking approval to reopen.
Companies that violate the directive may face continued closure, inclusion on NAFDAC’s Regulatory Watchlist, suspension or cancellation of product registrations, investigations and other legal or regulatory penalties. Adeyeye maintained that the policy was a public health measure and not selective enforcement.
