The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged telecom operators to pump fresh capital into their networks in order to tackle ongoing service issues and keep pace with surging data demand from video streaming, social media, and similar apps.

NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, acknowledged recent gains but warned they’re inadequate against explosive growth, stressing the need for surplus capacity—especially in busy urban zones—to stay ahead.

While NCC has freed up 100 MHz of extra spectrum and ramped up oversight via local-level quality tracking and audits, it maintains that spectrum alone won’t cut it without robust fibre buildout and steady investments.

Operators face forex hurdles on imported gear but must prioritize expansion, building on billions already spent in 4G/5G rollouts, fibre, densification, and rural reach to ease congestion for millions of users.
