The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has cautioned passengers to expect possible flight delays and cancellations as the rainy season sets in, noting that adverse weather could disrupt recent improvements in flight operations.
According to NCAA spokesperson Mike Achimugu, while delays had reduced compared to late 2025, these gains may be short-lived due to seasonal challenges. However, he expressed optimism that 2026 would bring greater stability as airlines begin to receive newly acquired aircraft, following fleet expansion deals secured at the aviation summit hosted by Festus Keyamo.
On the issue of high airfares during the festive period, Achimugu said the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has not yet submitted its report on alleged price-fixing by airlines. He maintained his stance that the fare increases were not caused by government taxes, contrary to claims by some operators.
He also highlighted a communication gap between airlines and passengers, urging operators to be more transparent and proactive in informing travelers. While more passengers are using the NCAA’s complaint portal, alternative channels such as email and social media remain available for those facing technical difficulties. The NCAA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting airlines through public awareness efforts but emphasized that airlines must take greater responsibility for customer engagement.
