The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed the arrest of four individuals found near the perimeter of Akure Airport after they were suspected of attempting to gain unauthorized access to the facility.
In a statement issued in Lagos by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the agency said the arrests followed a distress alert triggered when suspicious movement was observed behind the airport fence near the Eleyewo community. Security teams comprising FAAN Aviation Security personnel, the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and other local security groups launched a coordinated search operation in response.
During the operation, some suspects attempted to escape, but four individuals were eventually apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation. Agbebire praised the cooperation among aviation security personnel, security agencies, and local groups, including Amotekun and community vigilantes, for their quick response.
The incident was first detected by personnel at the airport’s control tower who noticed unusual movement on the runway and alerted security operatives. FAAN noted that the event highlights the importance of stronger airport perimeter protection and confirmed that the federal government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has begun phased upgrades of perimeter fencing and other security infrastructure at FAAN-managed airports to prevent unlawful access.
The agency reassured travelers and surrounding communities of its commitment to maintaining safety and security at airports across Nigeria.
