The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is spearheading a transformative push to bridge the AI language gap in Africa by partnering with NKENNEAi, a pioneering AI platform for African language. This bold collaboration addresses the exclusion of over 2,000 African languages from most global AI models, which are dominated by English and a few major tongues, leaving millions without access to vital digital tools.

Championing Multilingual AI Infrastructure

As Nigeria’s lead Information Technology agency, NITDA is driving scalable translation and language tech tailored for the country’s 500+ languages, targeting government services, healthcare, finance, and apps. This initiative tackles a key barrier to digital inclusion, building AI trained on tonal structures and dialects for superior accuracy in text translation, speech recognition, synthesis, and developer APIs—starting with Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Swahili, and Nigerian Pidgin.

Empowering Local Innovation

NITDA’s partnership builds on NKENNEAi’s roots in NKENNE, a platform with 400,000+ users preserving languages like Igbo and Twi. Backed by U.S. NSF awards totaling $1 million to NKENNEAi’s parent firm, the effort creates vast datasets and pipelines for tonal AI, ensuring Nigeria leads in homegrown tech.

Aligning with National Vision

This aligns seamlessly with Nigeria’s AI strategy under Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani, fueling talent programs like the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative. NITDA is also nurturing a skilled workforce through training in data annotation, NLP engineering, and public-sector deployment, fostering AI built by and for Nigerians.

Global Impact and Leadership

By enabling everyday African languages in digital platforms, NITDA counters barriers in healthcare, finance, and governance, outpacing global giants like Google. This staged rollout—pilots, expansions, training, and national infrastructure—positions NITDA as a trailblazer, ensuring African languages thrive in the AI era and propelling Nigeria to the forefront of innovation.
