The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has been directed by The President, Bola Tinubu, to immediately suspend its newly introduced cashless payment system at airports across the country, citing the severe gridlock and passenger suffering it has caused in less than a week.
The cashless policy recently implemented by FAAN to end decades of cash-based corruption and enhance revenue, the system—requiring POS or ‘Go Cashless’ cards for gates and parking—caused crippling gridlock at notable airports like Lagos and Abuja, stranding travelers and causing missed flights.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, briefing journalists post-FEC meeting, revealed Tinubu’s empathetic directive for FAAN to pause operations, revert temporarily to cash (with hybrid card options), and redesign a smoother electronic setup via private sector collaboration. “FAAN must act fast and report back,” Keyamo said, underscoring the focus on passenger relief while preserving revenue goals. This quick U-turn highlights FAAN’s pivotal role in balancing efficiency and public welfare.
