The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a thorough review of its 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for political parties to align them fully with the newly passed Electoral Act 2026, as part of 2027 election preparations. Led by Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, the process involves a technical workshop with national commissioners, directors, legal experts, and stakeholders conducting a detailed clause-by-clause update.
Key changes in the Act cover party administration, candidate nominations, compliance rules, dispute resolution, and INEC’s oversight role. The review draws on lessons from past elections—like unclear primaries, membership conflicts, poor financial reporting, and limited inclusion—to prevent litigation and boost transparency.
INEC is integrating its Political Party Performance Index (PPPI) for data-driven improvements in internal democracy, accountability, financial disclosures, accurate membership records, and benchmarks for women, youth, and persons with disabilities. Chairman Amupitan stressed that transparent party operations are essential for credible elections.
Supported by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and local experts, the effort aims to cut pre-election disputes. WFD’s Nigeria Director Adebowale Olorunmola called it a vital step for stronger democratic foundations. Next, a draft will be validated internally, and then shared with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and parties for input.
