The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has trained more than 100 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Lagos on digital citizenship, cybersecurity, data protection and assistive technologies.
Held from September 9 to 10, 2026, under the theme “Empowering Persons with Disabilities Through Digital Citizenship for an Inclusive Digital Economy,” the program equipped participants with skills for safe and responsible internet use. They learned how to protect personal information, identify online scams, avoid misinformation and use accessibility tools such as speech-to-text features.
Beyond technical skills, the training addressed discrimination and encouraged participants to build confidence in their abilities and contribute actively to society. Participants said the program improved their understanding of online safety, independence and the opportunities available through digital technology.
The NCC Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Aminu Maida, represented by Digital Economy Director Helen Obi, said digital inclusion must extend beyond internet access. He noted that technology can help PWDs overcome barriers to education, employment, entrepreneurship, public services and independent living.
Maida described PWDs as important contributors to Nigeria’s digital economy and said the Lagos training was part of a wider NCC initiative to provide digital skills to PWDs across the country’s geopolitical zones. The program complements the Commission’s E-Accessibility Project, which supplies ICT tools and assistive technologies to institutions supporting persons with disabilities.
