The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has directed electricity consumers in 15 states to file complaints with state regulators instead of the commission itself, following the transfer of regulatory powers under the Electricity Act 2023.
In an official X post, NERC confirmed that states including Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, Imo, Oyo, Edo, Kogi, Lagos, Ogun, Niger, Plateau, Abia, Nasarawa, and Bayelsa have activated their own State Electricity Regulatory Commissions to oversee local DisCos and resolve issues like tariffs and service quality.
The commission stressed that consumers in these areas—covering about 60% of Nigeria’s urban demand—must now direct all grievances to the respective state bodies via their websites or offices.
NERC still retains authority over the remaining 21 states and the FCT, where national DisCos operate under its watch, aiming for a seamless shift amid debates on competition benefits versus regional inconsistencies.
