President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Fatima Zuntu as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA). The announcement came in a statement on Monday from Chris Ugwuegbulam, Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Zuntu, a seasoned public health professional and policy strategist with expertise in national program implementation will serve an initial four-year term as stipulated under Section 5 of the National Biosafety Management Agency Act, 2015.
President Tinubu has directed the new NBMA chief to leverage her skills in fulfilling the agency’s mandate, which includes regulating genetically modified organisms (GMOs), ensuring biosafety standards, and promoting safe biotechnology practices across Nigeria’s agricultural, health, and environmental sectors.
Fatima Zuntu effectively replaces Bello Bwari as the leadership change aims to strengthen NBMA’s role amid growing debates on biotech adoption and food security in the country.
