The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has alerted the public to fake messages and links circulating online, aimed at breaching personal bank accounts. This notice comes from a statement from the bank’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali.
The warning follows a surge in cyber-attacks on key government agencies, including the recent outage of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) portal from April 17 to 20, 2026.
CBN noted that scammers are sending misleading emails and digital notices pretending to come from the bank, seeking to deceive people and steal private data.
“These bogus alerts urge users to click links and spread lies about the bank’s executives, approvals, and regulations, all to infiltrate individual accounts.”
The bank stressed that its official site is the sole reliable source for authentic updates, encouraging Nigerians to stick to verified channels. It further recommended ignoring dubious links, protecting sensitive details online and cross-checking any bank-related claims via official websites and credible news outlets.
